GI Diet

gi diet

GI stands for Glycemic Index and is a measure of the impact of food on your blood sugar level. So foods that have a high GI value will raise your body’s blood sugar levels very quickly and drop those levels very quickly too. Low GI food on the other hand will raise and lower the GI over a longer period and be more sustained at that level. The GI Diet has become very popular as it has been an effective method in losing weight. The purpose of this diet is to avoid eating foods with a high GI because food with a high GI gives you readily available energy which your body uses instead of burning the energy in your fat stores. The energy rush that high GI foods can give you are also usually followed by hunger and fatigue which will either make you feel horrible or make you eat more or both!

The GI diet runs along the same lines as the High Fibre Diet in that when you eat food with a low GI you will feel fuller for longer because it takes a while for your blood sugar levels to increase and decrease. There is a larger variety of low GI foods and they can also be mixed with high GI foods to make the overall meal a lower GI rating. The GI Diet helps you lose weight as you don’t overeat due to feeling full for longer which means you’re taking in less calories.

Fibre like oats, barley, whole grains, brown rice, whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, jacket potatoes, new potatoes, bran, wheat, sweet potato, pulses like lentils and beans, vegetables and fruit are all low GI foods.

Other foods with a low GI include: muesli bars, crackers, nuts, jam, milk and yoghurt and can also be eaten as well as lean protein like chicken breasts and eggs.
